Official Brewing Co. in Lower Paxton Township to relocate with its barbecue and burgers

Official Brewing Co. is moving this fall from 6295 Lyters Lane in Lower Paxton Township to 19 N. Hanover St. in Carlisle.

A barbecue and burger restaurant operating off the beaten path is preparing to relocate.

Official Brewing Co. at 6295 Lyters Lane in Lower Paxton Township is moving this fall to 19 N. Hanover St. in Carlisle.

Brandon Miller, co-owner with his parents, Chuck and Cindy Miller, said they will open a restaurant and brewery at the former Burd’s Nest Brewing Company.

The family has operated Official Brewing, better known as Official BBQ & Burgers, for seven years, after they bought the business from founder Port Dare. The restaurant specializes in smoked meats, including ribs, pulled pork and chicken wings, along with sides and micro-brewed beer.

The new location will afford Official Brewing space to expand operations and increase brewery production. Right now, Miller said the brewery occupies “every last inch” of available space.

Brewer Micah Delp said they will be able to double capacity, moving from a 3 1/2-barrel to a 7-barrel system. They also will triple fermentation capabilities and eventually add a canning line.

Delp brews a cross-section of styles, with about 15 beers in his portfolio including lagers, pale ales, stouts and IPAs.

Miller said the family looked at several properties in the Harrisburg region and jumped at the Burd’s Nest property due to the size and fact brewing equipment was included. The location also was appealing for the foot-traffic and captive audience from Dickinson College, the Army War College and Carlisle Events car shows.

The goal, Miller noted is to carve out a relaxed, hangout area for diners.

One downside, Official’s positioning in Carlisle could stir up some confusion. The Original Official BBQ also operates in the town at 848 N. Hanover St., but Miller points out his brewery is the only one in the region with barbecue.

“It will be interesting to be down the street from the competition,” he added.

Official Brewing plans to operate seven days a week. For now, it is open noon-9 p.m. Wednesday, noon-10 p.m. Thursday, 2-10 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 2-9 p.m. Sunday. Closed Monday-Tuesday.
