What the ale: Marshall Brewing's Tarbert Booze Bill is the beer of the week

What the Ale’s Beer of the Week is a special brew, a birthday ale for beer-lover Brad McAlister’s 50th birthday.

McAlister had asked Eric Marshall of Marshall’s Brewing if he could brew a beer for his birthday on the small-batch system near the front of the taproom at 1742 E. Sixth St.

Lucky for McAlister he said, “yes.”

McAlister and Marshall Brewing’s Cody Driscoll brewed a small batch of Tarbert Booze Bill, a 6% ABV India pale lager. Driscoll came up with the recipe after McAlister came up with the beer style.

“The grain bill is Pilsner Malt, a little bit of flaked oats for nice creaminess and some dextrin malt in there for good head retention. The hops are Mosaic and Amarillo on the hot side and then we did Mosaic, Amarillo and Citra for the dry hop. It gives it a kind of peach, tropical fruit taste. It’s just nice, clean and easy drinking,” Driscoll says.

McAlister has brewed beer before on a couple of different systems. This time around, “It was a lot of muscle work trying to stir the grains in there and keep them from making dough balls. It was just fun. Hurry up and wait. I enjoyed the whole process,” he says.

Turning another year old, especially the big 50, was the reason beer-lover McAlister wanted to brew and gift beer.

“I’m always here. And I always talk to people when I’m here. I always meet new people. It’s kind of what I do,” he says. “And I’m hoping this opens the door for meeting even more new people. I hope everybody enjoys it. I hope it lasts long enough that I get to enjoy it for a while, but also, everyone likes it so much it doesn’t last very long.”

“It was a fantastic experience. I can’t thank Cody and Eric enough and all the Marshall people. I love the Marshall people — fantastic family — and just glad to have been a part of this. Very gracious,” McAlister says.

The beer is only available in the Marshall Taproom.
